Shelters

Shelters is a major touring exhibition exploring the themes of shelter, off-grid living and self-build construction, curated for FCA&C at Kirkcaldy Galleries by Bobby Niven of the Bothy Project as part of Scotland’s Festival of Architecture 2016. The exhibition runs from Sat 5th March to Sun 5 June with an opening reception on Sat 5th March 1-3pm. A range of activities are being organised to complement the exhibition – details from www.fcac.co.uk

The first part of exhibition looks at the history of Lloyd Kahn’s iconic California-based Shelter Publications through an immersive installation of photographs and stories that highlight the human need and drive to find and make shelter. A seated resource area will provide a reading space for visitors to explore in depth the many diverse stories featured in the Shelter books, taking them on journeys round the world, looking at different materials and building techniques, cultures and craftsmanship.

Lloyd Kahn is a major figure within the international off-grid, self-build movement inspiring the Bothy Project and many others to build small spaces of their own. The second part of the exhibition will explore the culture of self-build initiatives in Scotland including the Bothy Project, 100 Wild Huts, Hermit’s Castle, Fife College and the innovative off-grid community of Scoraig.
