We are delighted to announce Josie KO as the recipient of the Visual Arts Scotland Residency 2023.
Bothy Project in partnership with Visual Arts Scotland, selected Josie from an open call available to VAS members working within any creative discipline. Josie will spend one week at Sweeney’s Bothy in September 2023.
Josie KO is a visual artist who lives and works in Glasgow. Her work combines colour, humour and a kitsch DIY aesthetic with dark gothic undertones, to playfully present narratives which speak towards the Black British experience in a white dominated environment. Focusing on the white gaze on the black body and decolonising art institutions, Josie aims to present an underrepresented perspective, and consolidate and investigate her own identity, upbringing and experience of intersectionality.
On Eigg, Josie hopes to explore the presence of blue men (fir gorma) in Scotland, highlighting hidden Black Scottish histories.
Josie is the third resident to undertake the Visual Arts Scotland Residency. Previous residents have included Jo Pudelko (2021) and Lorna Fraser (2022).
