Andrew Black

Andrew Black is an artist and filmmaker based in Scotland. He is currently working on an experimental documentary with Daniel Hughes, exploring historic and ongoing land struggles brought up by the recent sale of a Skye estate. He is part of a continuing exchange between land activists in Scotland, Ireland and Brazil.

Previous moving-image projects include On Clogger Lane (2023) which examines the transformation of an area of ancient Yorkshire countryside adjoining an American satellite surveillance station; Dàn Fianais (2021), a community film made in Skye and Lochalsh; Eternity Knocker (2019) which reflects on changing rural labour, framed by the work of artist and social historian Marie Hartley; Revenge Fantasy (2019), an obscene film-poem narrated by dancer Malik Nashad Sharpe, describing bodily interactions with militarised Scottish coastline; and Submerged Village (2017) which collages queer interpretations of ecological and social narratives relating to specific landscapes.

In 2026, he co-programmed Maximum Tilt, a short festival of moving image at the Byre Theatre, St Andrews, with Anne-Marie Copestake. In 2024-5, he contributed paintings to Digging in Another Time at the Hunterian, Glasgow, an exhibition reflecting on Derek Jarman’s art and activism. He presented a solo exhibition of paintings at Cento, Glasgow in 2023, and showed work with Aman Sandhu at Centre Clark, Montreal in 2022. Revenge Fantasy was included in Seized by the Left Hand at DCA, Dundee, in 2019-20, a group show responding to the work and ideas of Ursula K LeGuin. He served on the committee of Transmission, Glasgow, in 2016 and 2017.

Andrew will undertake a Creative Practitioner Residency at The Tin Church in October 2026, where he will develop and edit material relating to the Highland Land Leagues and the Crofters’ War, as part of an ongoing film project. This residency is supported by Creative Scotland.
