The Modern Institute – Andrew Kerr

The Modern Institute is a production and research gallery founded in Glasgow in 1998. They work closely with international artists on new projects in Scotland and abroad. These vary from large-scale public commissions to editions and exhibitions in established venues.

Andrew Kerr (b. 1977, Glasgow; Lives and works in Glasgow) is represented by The Modern Institute, Glasgow and BQ, Berlin.

Kerr’s paintings have been described as ‘self-effacing, modest in format and material, craftsman-like and precise in their finish’ (1). His paintings are rarely direct observational studies. Some are loosely based on small interior scenes, either arranged or as they were found, others are remembered events.

Kerr is looking forward to developing his practice out with the context of his Glasgow studio, using Sweeney’s Bothy on Eigg as a space for reading, writing, drawing, and as a base camp for exploring the island by foot.
